The 14 Peaks (The Welsh 3,000 footer peaks)

The Welsh Challenge Walk is to climb all 14 mountains in Wales that are over 3,000ft high in 17 hours or less, that is in the daylight hours of one day. There is a dispute as to whether there are 14 or 15 peaks. Is Garnedd Uchaf a peak... or just a prominent part of a ridge? Is Tryfan correctly surveyed at 915m (3,002 feet)?

This is a very demanding mountain challenge and should only be attempted by those with a high level of fitness and previous relevant experience. This walk starts from Pen y Pass and includes all the summits in the following order:

In the Snowdon group: Crib Goch 924m, Garnedd Ugain 1065m. Snowdon 1085m.

In the Glyderau: Elidir Fawr 923m. Y Garn 947m. Glyder Fawr 999m. Glyder Fach 994m. Tryfan 915m.

In the Carneddau: Pen yr Ole Wen 978m. Carnedd Dafydd 1044m. Yr Elen 962m. Carnedd Llewellyn 1064m. Foel Grach 976m. Garnedd Uchaf 926m and finally Foel Fras 942m.

The walk ends at the road head above Aber.

The Welsh 3,000 footers is a walk of approx. 26miles (42km) including some 12,250 feet of ascent (3700m) some of which is scrambling over exposed rocky terrain.

Organisation of the Challenge Walk.

  • The walk will be on Saturday July 3rd  2010. There will be a briefing meeting in the Hotel Victoria Llanberis on Friday July 2nd at 8.00p.m. Walkers will be transported from Llanberis to Pen Y Pass at 5.00am on the Saturday morning and will start the walk at approx. 5.30a.m.
  • Individual walkers will do the walk as one of  a small group minimum group size 4 maximum 8..Each group will be accompanied by one of our qualified leaders. We will ask applicants to complete a questionnaire about their experience and level of fitness.

The questionnaire is important and serves two purposes;

  • It is evidence that the applicant is fit enough to either complete the walk or to get down to a checkpoint should they wish to withdraw. There will be checkpoints at Nant Peris in the Llanberis Pass, at Llyn y Cwn above Llyn Idwal and at Ogwen on the A5.
  • It enables us to establish groups of individuals of similar fitness who will be comfortable doing the walk together.

The  Weather. Equipment and Timing

The walk is over high mountainous terrain, we hope for good weather but there is always the possibility of adverse conditions. However short range forecasts will tell us what to expect and we will plan accordingly. A clothing and equipment list will be provided in advance and we will advise on the Friday evening what will be particularly appropriate.  In the event of seriously adverse weather we may decide to delay the start time by an hour or two if that seems helpful or even to postpone the walk from the Saturday to the Sunday.

Accommodation and Food.

You may choose to organise your own accommodation. However if required we can arrange two nights (Friday and Saturday) accommodation including breakfast and dinner. At a cost of £110 (single rooms available at a small supplement may be available)

Everybody will carry their own food and drink for the day (we will recommend what we consider to be a good choice for keeping your energy levels high and remaining well hydrated). There will be opportunity to “refuel” at checkpoints.
There will be a briefing session and a get together on Friday evening and we will all get together to celebrate our achievement and share experiences over a beer on the Saturday night.

Travel

Walkers will arrange their own travel by car or train (the nearest railway station is Bangor) to Llanberis

Walkabout organise transport from and back to the railway station (if required). Transport from Llanberis to the start and back from the finish at Aber will be organised by Walkabout. Transport and support will also be available at the three checkpoints.

Availability and Suitability

The walk is available only open to individuals and small groups on the weekend of July 2nd to July 4th 2010. At other times it is available by special arrangement for organised groups, corporate groups and others using the walk as a charitable fund raising activity.

This walk is suitable for walkers who are comfortable on hard grade walks as described in our website - at Who Goes “fitness and walking grades” but who have also done enough recent training to have the endurance to complete the walk. Walkers will do the route as a member of a small group and each group will be accompanied by one of our qualified leaders.
