The challenge is to complete this walk over tough mountainous terrain in the Lake District making ascents of 24 peaks along the way in a total time of 24hours. The overall walking distance is approx.50km (31miles) and the amount of ascent is approx. 2500m (8000).
The walk is done over two days with approx. 12 hours on each day spent “on the hill”
On Day 1 the route covers 14.5 miles (23km) and climbs 14 summits. We start at the Kirkstone Inn and ascend up to Fairfield via Red Screes, Dove Crag and Hart Crag. We then go over Helvellyn and the Dodds before dropping down to the Thirlspot Inn overlooking Thirlmere and about half way between Keswick and Grasmere.
On Day 2 We do another 15.5 miles (27km) and ascend 10 summits including Scafell Pike which is England’s highest mountain. The day starts at Buttermere and after approx 12 hours of arduous walking in the mountains drops down to the finish at the head of Langdale.
This is a very demanding mountain challenge and should only be attempted by those with a high level of fitness and previous experience of endurance events.
The walk will be on the weekend Friday 13 -15th August 2010 There will be a briefing meeting on Friday August 13th at 8.00p.m. Walkers will be transported from the accommodation base at 6.00am on the Saturday morning and will start the walk at approx. 6.30a.m.
The questionnaire is important and serves two purposes;
The Weather. Equipment and Timing
The walk is over high mountainous terrain, we hope for good weather but there is always the possibility of adverse conditions. However short range forecasts will tell us what to expect and we will plan accordingly. A clothing and equipment list will be provided in advance and we will advise on the Friday evening what will be particularly appropriate. In the event of seriously adverse weather we may decide to delay the start time by an hour or two if that seems helpful or even to postpone the walk from the Saturday to the Sunday.
Accommodation and Food.
You may choose to organise your own accommodation. However if required we can arrange two nights (Friday and Saturday) accommodation including breakfast and dinner. At a cost of £110 (single rooms available at a small supplement may be available)
Everybody will carry their own food and drink for the day (we will recommend what we consider to be a good choice for keeping your energy levels high and remaining well hydrated). There will be opportunity to “refuel” at checkpoints.
There will be a briefing session and a get together on Friday evening and we will all get together to celebrate our achievement and share experiences over a beer on the Saturday night.
Travel
Walkers will arrange their own travel by car or train (the nearest railway station isOxenholme) to the chosen accommodation base in the Lake District
Walkabout organise transport from and back to the railway station (if required). Link transport and manned checkpoints will be available throughout the event.
Availability and Suitability
The walk is available only on the weekend of August 13th to 15th. This walk is suitable for walkers who are comfortable on hard grade walks as described in our website - at Who Goes “fitness and walking grades” but who have also done enough recent training to have the endurance to complete the walk. Walkers will do the route as a member of a small group and each group will be accompanied by one of our qualified leaders.
