Welsh 1000m Peaks Challenge Walk

The Welsh 1000metre peaks is sometimes done as a race (though many of the entrants spend as much time walking as running).  Walkabout offer, the opportunity to do this route as a “challenge walk.” Walkers will do the route in small groups  guided throughout the walk by one of our qualified leaders. We will only accept applicants who are able to satisfy us that they are strong experienced walkers and fit enough to complete the walk (see below).

The Welsh 1000 Metre Peaks Walk starts at Aber, which is on the North Wales coast, between Bangor and Llanfairfechan. The route makes its way over the four summits in Snowdonia  that exceed 1000m in height, in this order Carnedd Llewelyn 1064m, Carnedd Dafydd 1044m,Garnedd Ugain 1065m (at the end of the Crib y Ddysgl, finishing on the top of Snowdon 1085m.

The distance is approx. 21 miles (34km) and 8000 feet (2440m) of ascent. Which would take a steady walker (able to maintain a speed of 3miles an hour and allowing an additional 10mins per 100m of ascent) approx 12 hours. A really strong walker able to run some of the downhill and easy sections would take approx 8hours. This doesn’t allow for the descent from Snowdon summit which is approx 4.5 miles down the path to Llanberis.

Organisation of the Challenge Walk.

  • The walk will be on Saturday June 12th   2010. There will be a briefing meeting in the Hotel Victoria Llanberis on Friday June 11th  at 8.00p.m. Walkers will be transported from Llanberis to Aber at 5.00am on the Saturday morning and will start the walk at approx. 5.30a.m.
  • Individual walkers will do the walk as one of  a small group minimum group size 4 maximum 8. Each group will be accompanied by one of our qualified leaders. We will ask applicants to complete a questionnaire about their experience and level of fitness, and will invite them to join us for a training weekend in Llanberis at a time to be arranged.

 The questionnaire is important and serves two purposes;

  • It is evidence that the applicant is fit enough to either complete the walk or to get down to a checkpoint should they wish to withdraw. (There will be checkpoints at Ogwen on the A5 and at Pen y Pass YHA from which transport will be available back to Llanberis)
  • It enables us to establish groups of individuals of similar fitness who will be comfortable doing the walk together.

The  Weather. Equipment and Timing
The walk is over high mountainous terrain, we hope for good weather but there is always the possibility of adverse conditions. However short range forecasts will tell us what to expect and we will plan accordingly. A clothing and equipment list will be provided in advance and we will advise on the Friday evening what will be particularly appropriate.  In the event of seriously adverse weather we may decide to delay the start time by an hour or two if that seems helpful or even to postpone the walk from the Saturday to the Sunday.

Accommodation and Food.

You may choose to organise your own accommodation. However if required we can arrange two nights (Friday and Saturday) accommodation including breakfast and dinner. Price will depend on accommodation standard required and available.

Everybody will carry their own food and drink for the day (we will recommend what we consider to be a good choice for keeping your energy levels high and remaining well hydrated). There will be opportunity to “refuel” at checkpoints.

There will be a briefing session and a get together on Friday evening and we will all get together to celebrate our achievement and share experiences over a beer on the Saturday night.

Travel

Walkers will arrange their own travel by car or train (the nearest railway station is Bangor) to Llanberis

Walkabout organise transport from and back to the railway station (if required). Transport from Llanberis to the start and back from the finish will be organised by Walkabout. Transport and support will also be available at the two checkpoints.

Availability and Suitability

The walk is only available to individuals and small groups on the weekend of Friday May 28th to Saturday May 29th 2010. At other times it is available by arrangement for organised groups, corporate groups and others using the walk as a charitable fund raising activity.

This walk is suitable for walkers who are comfortable on hard grade walks as described in our website - at Who Goes “fitness and walking grades”. Walkers will do the route as a member of a small group and each group will be accompanied by one of our qualified leaders.
