It is essential that you have adequate travel insurance including cover for your walking activities on your holiday particularly for walking holidays outside the UK.
For walking holidays in Wales or the Lake District you may not need all this cover. Medical expenses are covered by the NHS and Mountain Rescue is free. You may find that you already have adequate cover for Personal Liability, Personal Accident and Death, Personal belongings money, baggage and cancellation.
For clients going on our trips to the French Alps or to Spain we recommend you obtain the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which gives access to state provided medical treatment in the event of sickness or accident. Phone 0845 606 2030 or visit www.ehic.org.uk.
The following should be covered up to or approximate to the figures quoted. Please note this list is for your guidance only it is not claiming to be a definitive list of everything that you could or should have covered by insurance.
The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) offer specialist cover. However their policies are only available to members. Membership costs £29.50 so it's only worth joining and taking insurance with them if you are going to do a lot of walking at home and more particularly abroad. lf that is the case you could consider an annual policy such as the BMC's trek policy which costs approx £42 for a year. This covers "All Travel Activities plus; Hill Walking, Trekking, backpacking and easy scrambles including via ferrata and trekking routes."
There are also other benefits with membership; Huts usage, discounts from outdoor equipment dealers etc.
For expert advice from the BMC ring O870 010 4878 or 0161 445 6111 or go to their website www.thebmc.co.uk.
