The Cumbrian Way starts at the market town of Ulverston, (just south of the Lake District National Park boundary and close to Morecambe Bay), and gives a walk all the way to Caldbeck a small village on the northern boundary of the National park. Carlisle is a town of historic significance near the Scottish Border but a day’s walk beyond the northern boundary of the National park.
This well known and wonderful walk is 58 miles / 93 Km, at an average of 14.5 miles a day it requires 4 days walking, the longest day is 16miles and the shortest 12miles. The way is pleasant moderate walking with only a few gentle uphill sections to be done.
The option is open to continue from Caldbeck to Carlisle 14 miles north of the Lake District National Park boundary. However the route is through farmland and different in character from the rest of the walk.
The Cumbrian Way crosses the park from south to north and passes through some of the Lake District's most famous and spectacular scenery. The route takes a variety of paths which avoid the high fells yet goes through the heart of this beautiful landscape of mountains and lakes.
From Ulverston we walk over to Lake Coniston and Coniston a 14 mile (22km)
The next leg goes via Tarn Hows and Little Langdale to Great Langdale a walk of 12 miles.
Langdale is in the Central Lake District not far from Grasmere and Hawkshead, both these villages are closely associated with William Wordsworth.
From Langdale the path goes over the Stakes pass down to Borrowdale and Keswick a walk of 16miles (26km)
The Cumbrian Way then skirts round the most northern of the major Lakeland peaks; Skiddaw; and leads over to Caldbeck where our walk ends. This last day’s walk is 16miles (26km)
The Weather. We are doing this trek from Monday May 21st to Friday May 25th. Late spring early summer is probably the best time of the year to walk in the Lake District. The weather is often beautiful, May being one of the driest and warmest months of the year. The countryside is coming into flower and it’s peaceful before the busy summer tourist season starts.
