The Grand Tour of Monte Rosa

The Grand Tour of Monte Rosa.

“The ultimate alpine walk, outclassing all others”

The Grand Tour of Monte Rosa (as distinct from the simple tour of Monte Rosa) is the most demanding trekking challenge in the European Alps. Approximately 130 miles, depending on the actual route taken with more than 12,000 m of ascent; it is acclaimed as the ultimate alpine walk, outclassing all others. Only strong walkers comfortable in steep mountain terrain and fit enough to maintain a pace of at least 2.5 miles an hour for an average of 7 hours a day for 14 days and will be able to do this trek.

We are only doing this trek once this year August 28th to September 11th this is the optimum time of the year to do the walk and as the Pennine Alps have the lowest rainfall figures in the European Alps we anticipate reasonable weather.
We are only accepting 10 people to join us on the trek; they must be fit and have had some previous relevant experience.

The GMTR start in Martigny in Switzerland and goes round the Monte Rosa massif, part of the Pennine Alps and the highest single block of mountains in Europe. The massif includes Monte Rosa the highest mountain in Switzerland and second highest in Europe, it also includes the Matterhorn one of the most celebrated mountains in the world. We will travel from Geneva via Chamonix Mont Blanc to Martigny just across the frontier in Switzerland. From Martigny the GTMR takes us into Italy for the first 6 days and then back into Switzerland and the trek through the Swiss Alps takes us back to Martigny. We will have walked through the grandest alpine scenery in Europe and visited renowned areas such as Arolla, Zermatt and Saas Fee.

The Weather.

We are doing this trek from August 28th to September 11th. This is the optimum time of the year to do the walk. We avoid the heat and unstable weather conditions of high summer but there are still plenty daylight hours. This period is normally before the snow begins to encroach on the high passes and footpaths of the Alps. The Pennine Alps have the lowest rainfall figures of any alpine area in Europe, and we can reasonably expect fair weather.

Accommodation and Food.

We arrange accommodation in small hotels, village inns, mountain huts and dortoirs along the way. Accommodation includes breakfast and dinner. Everybody gets their own food and drink for the days walk. There will be occasions when we can stop for refreshment at  alpine huts and restaurants.

Travel

Clients arrange their own flights to Geneva usually with Easy Jet or similar airline. We meet you at Geneva airport and arrange all transport to the starting point of the walk and again we arrange transport back to the airport for your return flight.   Other transport may be used to avoid unnecessary walks along valley roads or to save time or energy; this will be at the discretion of the leader/guide.

Availability.

This walk is only suitable for walkers who are comfortable on hard grade walks as described in our website at Who Goes “fitness and walking grades”.

We are only accepting 10 people to join us on this trek (which is only available August 28th to September 11th 2010) and they must be fit and have had relevant experience. We will be organising a weekend in North Wales in early summer when we can get to know one another and establish how much training we need to do to be ready for the GTMR in September.
