This is a low level circular walk around the whole Snowdon range; a distinctive block of mountains made up of Snowdon and its satellite peaks and ridges. This range is separated by three major valleys from the other mountain areas of North Wales which together make up the Snowdonia National Park.
This walk takes you through these three contrasting valleys and areas; all dominated by Snowdon. This is one of the most ancient landscapes in the world and the social, economic and political history of Wales is carved into these hills. This is a land of Iron Age hill forts and settlements, of Roman roads and fortresses of Edwardian and Welsh castles from the 12th and 13th centuries. It is the heartland of Welsh language and culture. A mountain fastness with the highest mountains in Wales and England, the cradle for British mountaineering. . It is a land of great feats of engineering. The quarries now silent once produced the slate that roofed industrial Britain. This walk “Cylchdaith yr Wyddfa” is through an evocative landscape of outstanding beauty, geographical and historical significance, for some it is a soul stirring experience.
The route follows a series of footpaths, bridleways, forest and woodland tracks through the valleys that separate the Snowdon range from its neighbours.
The walk starts in Llanberis at the western end of the Llanberis Pass, which forms the northern boundary of the Snowdon range. The pass provides the most direct land link (A4086) between Caernarfon and the A5 road (once a Roman road) between England and North Wales.
From Llanberis the walk goes over to the next valley Dyffryn Gwyrfai which provides the route from Beddgelert to Caernarfon and is in part occupied by Llyn Cwellyn. This valley is the south western boundary of the Snowdon range. A variation takes in Beddgelert which is an attractive village with a special place and story in Welsh history and legend.
From here we walk through the Nantgwynant valley to the famous Pen y Gwyryd (the training base for the successful Everest expedition of 1953 and Pen y Pass (the head of the Llanberis Pass) and finally down the Pass along and above Llyn Peris and Llyn Padarn back to Llanberis.
The total distance is 25 miles with 3,000 feet of ascent at a comfortable pace approx 12 hours walking? The walk will be done over two days by moderate walkers for easy walkers it can be spread over three days if required.
